If we hunt around, we can find the "LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Executable File Specification" which explains that NXT programs run in a bytecode VM and doesn't have the ability to read/write arbitrary memory. Variables are restricted to a "data segment" of fixed size, and all memory accesses must be inside it.
